The first week with a baby...

Some thoughts from my first week with my baby:

It is amazing how quickly you become attached and dependent upon one another.

My left arm is killing me because I was holding Sunny all weekend while doing the image processesing from a recent wedding. The concept of not holding her in my arms as she slept and I worked seemed foreign.

Crying...babies cry. Sometimes even they do not know why. My wife and I check the top three causes, and do the best we can. When they cry, it can be a tolerable sound or a shrieking hell that could wake the dead. I am convinced that someone should market a car alarm that has the siren on the inside, and it should blare a baby's cry. No car thief could remain inside for more than a few seconds. Even with headphones blasting the Ramones.

Sunny likes the sound the wine fridge makes and when I hold her and stand next to the door of the furnace room when the heat is on. The "soothing" sounds on the "Happiest Baby" dvd sounds remarkably like the sound the submarine Red October made when running on their "catapillar" silent drive.

She discovered her hands this weekend and now grips my finger tightly and holds one to my neck when I hold her to my shoulder. She sometimes tracks my movements with her eyes and head...this is new.

She makes this chirping noise and a cooing once in a while when sleeping. Very cute.

My wife is home with her and I made it into the office to get some work done...I miss them both.

16 Aircraft Engineers=12 Volts

The 16 Swedish aircraft engineers performed diagnostics, replaced the battery and ran the pre-flight checklist. We are go for takeoff. OK, I may be getting carried away with the airplane lingo. I like Saab's new "Born from Jets" line of advertising and I miss the days I used to fly Cessna 172's and Piper Warriors over the beach.

Weird about the battery going, because the car behaved totally fine, even on very cold mornings. I have never had a battery go from totally fine, to non-functional instantly. The only thing I can think of, and my analytical mind won't let it rest, is that one of the lead plates in the battery was so sulfated that it fractured or broke off during the drive into NYC on some bad potholes, and shorted the battery itself. I would not have noticed a problem because the car was running and the alternator was providing juice.

Baby is doing well. A little Jaundice, which is common. That is why we were at the Dr. today. Amazing how she has totally changed my life already. I spent twenty minutes in a staring contest with her today. She won.

Photo wise, I am excited...I have a show coming up at Grind in Bellmore in early March and I have some great new stuff. I also have three special images I can't wait to hang in Spoon, in Lindenhurst. It is just a great place and I just don't get out there as often as I want to.
I have a bunch of weddings booked for 08 with such awesome couples. I am really looking forward to them.

Oh, the picture? That's me a few years ago taking a Cessna 172 up from Republic over Fire Island.

Finally...A tow home

I don't plug many products or companies, but I know good service. And when a company and their people go out of their way to deliver good stuff, I have to give them props.

I called my auto insurance, Geico, and through out a 20 minute phone call, my rep John, and his supervisor Chris, were just awesome. They totally understood my circumstances and even though my coverage (which I did not even know I had, thanks Dad for suggesting it) only provided a tow to the nearest dealer (a block away), they worked it out so not only would they tow my car on a flatbed from the West side of NYC to the Saab dealer near my home, in Rockville Centre, but the awesome driver, Lee, from All City Towing, drove me home after we dropped the car at the closed dealer around 10PM.

Cost? $0.00 (well, I did give Lee a nice tip, but that is not really a cost...just a way of saying thanks).

Now...hopefully those 16 aircraft engineers at Saab can get me up and running quickly. I am hoping it is just a battery. The car is 4 and a half years old and still on the original battery...so it is time. Just weird to go totally flat and not even be able to be jumped.

Baby and mom are doing well. The cat is curious...but cautious.

My dad was unable to remove the car seat from his car. But a quick call to my brother and we had tons of family over to see the baby and remove the seat in no time flat.

It has been a loooooong weekend. Oh wait...it's Monday. Weekend is over.
HEY! Tomorrow is my birthday! 38....Is that old? I forget.

Why can't I leave the car overnight?

Because the Hospital will let you leave the car in their driveway for an hour while you are picking up you newborn and wife...but it is not long term parking. I can't blame them.

Dad will drive wife & baby home to LI

Dad will drive wife & baby home to LI while I resolve the car issue. Dad likes my choice of car so much he bought the same Saab 9-3, same color, black.
Mmmmmm, Boost!

$250 towing + storage to get to a dealer

Ran over to Potamkin Saab, 2 blocks away from the hospital. Their tow service....
$250 towing + storage to get to a dealer 2 blocks away. I love NYC. Wife & baby patiently waiting for me to solve this issue so they can go home.

WANTED: 16 Aircraft Engineers.

My Dad came to the hospital and we tried a jump start. No joy. The lights flickered and relays clicked, but nothing else. It is a manual...and I thought about just coasting down the driveway and popping the clutch...but then what if it is not the battery or starter...then I am stuck on the street in NYC. The NYPD Traffic Squad is like the A-Team. They would have that car down to pier 17 in no time. Been there done that. No thanks.

WANTED: 16 Aircraft Engineers, with tools.

Going Home is Never Easy.

Going Home is Never Easy. My Saab won't start. Never once had a problem. Hopefully a jump will work.

Fresh Baby...

Back from Break

After pushing and pushing...my wife needed a break. All the charts were good on baby and mom, so "Back to work!"

6:20 Fully Dialated....not long now!

Erica is progressing well and is just about ready. We think it is just a couple of hours until we are parents!

5PM No baby yet

Erica is making progress, but slowly. The hopes for a vaginal delivery are still strong, but we are preparing for a C section if need be.

Both baby and soon to be mother are doing well. All vitals are where they should be.
It may be a few hours before much else happens.

2:20 PM 6CM Dialated

Ahhhhhh. Epidural Bliss at last

The spinal catheter was not working out so well, so we went for try number 2 on the epidural. This time it worked and now Erica is feeling great.

Kids....don't do drugs! Moms.... epidural is the way!

"GET ME DRUGS!"

The spinal catheter is leaving much to be desired. We are going to try for the epidural again in a few minutes.

11:11 Make a wish!

Erica says " I wish I don't need another epidural!"

Actually, Erica did not get an epidural, but a spinal catheter. They could not get the epidural to work right.

8:30Am. We have contractions....

No baby yet. 8:30Am. But we have contractions! Erica is doing great.

No baby yet. 5am.

No baby yet. 5am. Erica is doing well, I am bleary eyed. I have had a bad cold for a week and feel like crap. Chills, fever, elevator ear, all the fun stuff that the big Q is supposed to fix, but isn't. I crashed at my dad's a few blocks away for 3 hours.

Much needed caffeine....

The Starbucks across the street was closed, but this one was open...and provided some much needed caffeine.

10:30 And no baby...

10:30 And no baby...

Still no baby...

Still no baby...

Home base for the next few days...

St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital will be home base for the next few days. Now the waiting begins. We have been here since before 3PM Friday...and at 4:30 we are still in a waiting room. Luckily, I figured out how to connect my cell/cameraphone/swiss army knife to my laptop and BAM! we have internet.

Look for additional updates live as then happen. *

*NOT actually live as they happen. Subject to technical delays, spotty cell coverage and censorship by the momma. See dealer for details, your mileage may vary. Not all blogs will qualify.

It was a Dark and Stormy Night...

At 2:20PM I got the call. Meet her at the Hospital and lets go have a baby.
This little girl is going to be a troublemaker. The sky was dark and gray and a rainy sleet dropped from the sky. Ok, maybe I am being a little dramatic. On the way to the hospital the cabbie gave me sage words of wisdom and I am calm and collected.

Baby is almost a week overdue...

Almost a week past her due date and still no baby. My wife and I were at the Doctor's today and all is well. While the Doctor said Friday we will induce...I jokingly suggested going for a ride at Great Adventure's Free Fall ride. I am confident we would have a baby at the end of the ride. If you have never been, Free Fall is a 13 story drop with a horizontal, but sudden stop at the end.

Photowalking Astoria

In the heart of Astoria, just blocks from Parisi bakery and Omonia Cafe.

My wife was kidnapped from Astoria to come to the Suburbs with me.

We go back a few times a year to walk around and reminisce. Our first date was at Cafe Bar and we spent many a cold night in front of the fireplace at Sac's Pizza.

Why you should always keep a cell phone around

I am convinced that it is someones job to go around to all the payphones and disable them or smear them with a substance that you would not want near you.

Strangely, on Steinway Street, there is a cell phone store every 74 feet, with every brand you have ever heard of. Sometimes you will even find a Sprint store, four stores from another Sprint store. I am not saying the payphone situation and the cell stores are related....

Sac's Pizza

Sac's holds a special place in my heart for two reasons, first, it was a date place for my wife and I and we have some nice memories there, huddled next to the fireplace on a cold night. But also...the pizza. I am convinced the the further from NY one gets, the more round bread with pasta sauce and cheese, pizza becomes. Well, maybe in the old days the epicenter of good pizza was Little Italy. But since there is only one block of Little Italy left and most of that is Korean T shirt shops, Astoria now holds the title of best pizza in NY, at least in my opinion. Hand made, old world style with a crust that is thin but not paper thin, fresh made mozzarella and just the right amount of home made sauce. Our favorite is with prosciutto and sun dried tomatoes. If artichokes are in season, you are up for a treat because they have a panfried aritchoke appitizer that is really sweet and mild. You will mop up the warm olive oil from them with your pizza crust until there is nothing left. They are that good. And while they do have a nice selection of wine, they also have an unexpected treat; a few beers from my favorite brewery, Ommegang. You folks know I am a sucker for good Belgian style beers.

Sac's Pizza

MMMMMMMMM

Sac's Pizza

Fresh artichokes, pan fried in olive oil and spices.

The last Checker Cab in NY?

While the last working Checker cab in NY stopped a few years ago, you still see them from time to time on the streets. This one belongs to the TaxiKing, whomever that is. In nice shape for a 1979. A little rust on the rocker panels, but hey, you know how many NYC miles are on this thing!

Wet Day in NY

3Am thunderstorms in January, 60 degress and soaking wet out. Maybe this Global Warming thing won't be so bad. Heck, by the time I am ready to retire, Long Island will be the new Florida.

'Tis the Season...

...To get on a plane, bus, train or ship, and come visit NYC. I am in Rockefeller Center just about every day and I can tell you that I have never seen it more crowded that in the last few days. The big tree captures most people, like a tractor beam and they fight to be free and find other treasures.
Today people were absolutely enthralled with the Zamboni at the Rock Center Rink. They ooohed and aaahed as it magically skimmed the ice and then the driver tucked it back into it's cubby hole.
As soon as the all clear rang out, the ice was filled to capacity with skaters possessing all levels of balance. You know how drunk people think they can fight like Mike Tyson? Well, I have come to the conclusion that the tourists have decided that upon entering the 5 boroughs, they magically turn in to Brian Boitano. And folks, I have got to tell you, sometimes it is down right entertaining. Mark my words, seeing Blades of Glory on the airplane does NOT mean you can do a triple axel without tasting the ice.

I will grab a sandwich and people watch, maybe talking with some tourists with questions about what to see, where to go and what to eat.

Other than talking with folks from far away places I watch how people take pictures. It is a torturing experience for me because the photojournalist in me wants to just observe them and learn their story, while the photographer in me wants to coach them...just move a little lower and to the right...thats it, now wait 5 seconds until the big guy in the white shirt out of the shade...the shirt will bounce a bunch of light in your daughters face and really make it stand out from the tree in the background.

Christmas time in NY

Well, it is about that time...we are coming down to the wire. Hordes of merry folks are flocking to see the big tree in Rockefeller Center. If you go to join them, take a moment and look for the amazing NY scenes that most folks miss. They are everywhere!
I finally got my Sony K790A linked to my blog, so you will start to see a lot more images that has little or no text. The Cameraphone takes great images (for a cameraphone) but I hate typing on the little keypad, so I will let the images do the talking.

Six Weeks Until My Life Changes Forever !

Only Six Weeks Left!

My Wife and I have our first bun in the oven and she is almost done baking. In late January, we will be having our first child.
We are so excited we are silly about it. This quick snap doesn't quite do her justice because I have never seen my Wife more beautiful.

Even this late in the game, my Wife is not slowing down and vows to keep working until the last. When not playing marketing guru, she is domestic goddess extraordinaire. She went nuts cooking for Thanksgiving, and this year Festivus falls on New Years Eve, so we are combining parties and she is gearing up for entertaining a house full of friends.

SHOCKING!

Ok, we hope it isn't shocking actually. But walking the streets of New York, you do come across some interesting views. After a rash of electrical mishaps where traffic signal poles and manhole covers seem to be mysterically electrified, I thought this just screamed "FIX ME".

51 St between Broadway and 6th Ave.

And you thought the cop car in Transformers was HOT!

I always thought the the hot cars used on shows like Miami Vice (wow, I am showing my age here, huh?) were bogus. Cops don't get to drive around in Ferraris....or maybe they do.
Walking around NYC today I saw a nice ride. Somehow, somebody very important gets a ride in a Rolls Royce with Mount Vernon Police tags.
Obviously on official Police business as the car was parked at a hydrant on 6th Ave.
Maybe the Maybach is in the shop?

(Back to) The Grind

I love great coffee. For me, that means hanging out at The Grind in Bellmore. I frequently feature my landscape images there and rotate a gallery with other local artists.

I will be hanging my hat there for the next two weeks. Please stop by for a variety of prints that let you see through my eyes.

They are on Merrick Road, next to the firehouse.

Anna & Zoltan's Wedding in the woods

Ok, the Wedding was not actually in the woods. It was in a beautiful Hungarian Church in New Jersey, but the reception was at Camp Greenkill, in Hugenot, NY. The camp is at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains and is a lakeside rustic retreat (think more ski lodge than tents).

I was one of only a handful of folks on site who can not speak Hungarian, and of course most of the night was in Hungarian, so it made for some interesting conversations to say the least. The guests spent the night in bungalow lodges overlooking the lake, and the reception was at the main lodge, on top of the hill. The stars were out and the sky was a deep black, which is a rarity for my eyes to see in the light pollution of Long Island.

The stone fireplaces were roaring and in such a rustic setting the ambiance was right for romance. Even though the toasts and speeches were in Hungarian, I didn't need to understand the words to see the emotions expressed. What a wonderful family you both now have!

Now I am used to working long days, but when I heard about Midnight Stuffed Cabbage, I knew these Hungarians knew how to party! When many guests were too pooped to drink and dance, trays of home made stuffed cabbage came out at Midnight, providing a much needed second wind for all.

Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed...

OK, Maybe not bushy tailed but in spite of consuming copious amounts of home made Hungarian hooch, Anna and Zoli made it to the lake for some early AM photo ops the next morning.

After a few great shots with a woodlands backdrop, they spent the Morning enjoying the scenic countryside before heading on a plane, back to the Old Country.

Canstruction? What's that?

Each year my wife is active in something called Canstruction. The basic premise is that various corporate sponsored teams design and build sculptures from cans of food, that they donate themselves and/or gather from a sponsor. The hours that go into these things is unbelievable!
Canstruction 07 is over in NY, but check the website to see when it comes near you, and how you can get involved. The food really helps out some folks who could use it and it is a lot of fun in the process.

The area highlighted in green, is a smaller crop of the photo, so you can more easily see the image made up by the cans.

Weekend in Philly (Contd)

After an amazing meal at Buddakan, we walked around Old Town and stumbled upon Beneluxx. They may just be the trifecta of foods I love. Like their sister tavern a few blocks away, specializes in Belgian beer. They have tons of hand crafted ales by the ounce in these cool beaker glasses, so you can try a little of everything.

They also have my two other favorite foods (what? Beer is food, there is nutrition in it.). They have over 20 different types of chocolate and 30 cheeses!

If you ask Mr. Rutter nicely, he will even pair flights of beer with cheese or chocolate.
This may just be my new favorite place. If you are in Philly, check this place out: http://www.beneluxx.com/

While in Philly...

I had my wife come down on Friday afternoon and we spend the weekend down there for our Anniversary. Philly is a really great city, with so much to do. I also found it very walkable. Somehow, that did not stop us from taking the double decker bus tour.
We also found some great restaurants, like Buddakan and Continental. Through a friend of a friend (You know who you are and we appreciate it SO MUCH!) we got in for Saturday night dinner at Buddakan on only a few days notice. The ambiance, service and food were perfect! They also had a very nice flight of Sake.

Off to Philly...

I am in Philly this week for Phase III of the FINRA CRCP certificate at Wharton. Aside from the whimsy and joy of discussing SEC statutes in microscopic detail, it is actually really a great program. A three year program, the CRCP is a way to wrap up my 14 years of securities work, boil it down to it's essence and exchange ideas with other compliance and regulatory professionals about the methods and insights used to protect your investments.

Not sure if you are on the right blog? You are.
One of the reasons I provide such strong value as a photographer is that I am doing it because I truly am passionate about it and want to make your event images something you will enjoy for decades. I am well capitalized, so I can offer a package that really fits what most couples need and not push things they don't. That capital also means I don't take shortcuts to save a buck and can use the best equipment for the specific images.

Not that securities law is not fun....
